Gardeners Fitzrovia Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Fitzrovia is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients, visitors, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our gardening and grounds maintenance activities. We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and aim to achieve continuous improvement in all aspects of safety performance across the areas we serve.
Policy aims and objectives
The primary aims of this Health and Safety Policy are to prevent injury, ill health, damage to property and harm to the environment. We will achieve this by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing appropriate control measures before work begins and throughout the duration of our gardening projects.
We will ensure that health and safety considerations are fully integrated into our planning, scheduling and delivery of services, from one-off garden tidy-ups to ongoing maintenance programmes.
Management responsibilities
The management of Gardeners Fitzrovia has overall responsibility for implementing this policy and for ensuring that adequate resources are provided to maintain high standards of health and safety. This includes providing suitable equipment, personal protective equipment, training, supervision and safe systems of work tailored to gardening tasks.
Management will regularly review working practices, risk assessments and incident reports to ensure that safety procedures remain effective and reflect current operations. Where improvements are identified, they will be introduced as soon as reasonably practicable.
Employee responsibilities
Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Employees must cooperate fully with Gardeners Fitzrovia in implementing this policy and any related procedures or instructions.
All staff are required to use equipment correctly, wear appropriate protective clothing, follow safe systems of work, report hazards or defects without delay and notify management of any accidents, near misses or concerns that may affect safety.
Risk assessment and safe working methods
Before commencing any gardening or grounds maintenance activity, a suitable and sufficient risk assessment will be carried out. The assessment will consider factors such as terrain, weather conditions, access routes, nearby buildings, utilities, traffic, wildlife and the presence of clients, neighbours or members of the public.
On the basis of these assessments, Gardeners Fitzrovia will develop safe working methods for tasks including grass cutting, hedge trimming, planting, tree work within our competence, pressure washing, clearance of waste and the use of powered machinery. These methods will be communicated clearly to staff and monitored on site.
Use of tools, machinery and equipment
We will supply tools and machinery that are suitable for professional gardening work and maintain them in a safe condition. All powered equipment will be inspected regularly, serviced in line with manufacturer recommendations and removed from use if found to be defective.
Only trained and authorised personnel may operate machinery such as mowers, trimmers, blowers and other powered tools. Guards, safety devices and covers must not be removed or bypassed. Equipment will be transported, stored and fuelled in accordance with safe working practices to prevent fire, spillage and contamination.
Personal protective equipment
Gardeners Fitzrovia will provide appropriate personal protective equipment where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Depending on the task, this may include safety footwear, gloves, high-visibility clothing, eye and hearing protection, respiratory protection and head protection.
Employees are required to use the protective equipment provided, to look after it carefully and to report any loss or damage so that it can be repaired or replaced promptly.
Manual handling and physical work
Gardening work can involve lifting, carrying, digging and other physical tasks. To reduce the risk of injury, we will assess manual handling activities and apply measures such as mechanical aids, team lifting and realistic weight limits for loads.
Staff will receive guidance on good posture, lifting techniques and how to recognise early signs of strain or fatigue. Employees must not attempt to move loads that are beyond their capability and should seek assistance whenever needed.
Chemical and biological hazards
Where gardening tasks involve the use of approved products such as fertilisers, soil improvers or other substances, Gardeners Fitzrovia will ensure that they are handled, stored, applied and disposed of in accordance with safety information and relevant regulations.
We will also assess and manage biological risks such as allergens, stinging insects, animal waste, sharp vegetation and contaminated materials. Staff will be instructed on safe hygiene practices, including hand washing and the use of appropriate protective clothing.
Site access, public safety and traffic
To protect clients, neighbours and passers-by, our teams will set up work areas in a way that maintains safe access and clearly identifies any hazards. This may include the use of cones, barriers, signage or spotters where necessary.
Vehicles used for transporting staff, tools and waste will be parked considerately and safely. Loading and unloading operations will be planned to avoid unnecessary reversing and to keep members of the public away from moving vehicles and equipment.
Training, communication and supervision
Gardeners Fitzrovia is committed to providing appropriate health and safety training for all employees. This includes induction training, task-specific instruction, toolbox talks and refresher sessions where necessary.
Supervisors will monitor compliance with safety procedures on site, provide guidance and correct unsafe behaviour. Employees are encouraged to raise any health and safety issues openly so they can be addressed promptly.
Accidents, incidents and emergency arrangements
All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as possible. Incidents will be recorded, investigated and reviewed in order to identify root causes and implement preventive measures.
Our teams will carry basic first aid supplies and will be familiar with emergency arrangements relevant to the properties and outdoor spaces in which we work. Where required, we will coordinate with clients and site managers to ensure that emergency procedures are clear and effective.
Monitoring, review and continuous improvement
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, services or legal requirements. Feedback from employees, clients and other stakeholders will be taken into account so that our arrangements remain practical and effective.
Gardeners Fitzrovia is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. By working together, we aim to provide high-quality gardening services while maintaining a safe environment for everyone affected by our work.
